He is head of FH Aachen during a time when the course for the success of the university is being set: From 2005 to 2009, Prof. Dr. Manfred Schulte-Zurhausen presides over FH Aachen as Rector; the success of the 2008 expansion programme and, hence, the introduction of new degree programmes oriented towards the challenges of the times, is above all connected with his name. In these four years, FH Aachen is changing more than ever before - in an educational landscape that is also subject to significant change. The keywords are: Bologna Process and a switch to Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes, the Higher Education Freedom Act, the collection of student fees, the development of Campus Jülich - and, of course, the acceptance of the FH in the competition "Ausbau der Fachhochschulen in Nordrhein-Westfalen" (Expansion of the Universities of Applied Sciences in North Rhine-Westphalia). The concept drawn up by FH Aachen comprises a total of 720 new places at university in four subject clusters, with the degree programmes Timber Engineering and Rail Vehicle Technology being newly introduced.
