At FH Aachen, the institutes stand for interdisciplinarity, research and proximity to the industry. They are divided into in-house institutes (facilities of faculties and central institutions) and affiliated institutes (facilities outside the university).
We used to be known as 'the Solaris', as exotics. Today, what we do is common practice.
The first in-house institute was founded in Jülich in 1992: The Solar-Institute Jülich. "We used to be known as 'the Solaris', as exotics. Today, what we do is common practice," says Prof. Dr. Klemens Schwarzer, a member of the SIJ right from the start, who helped establish the institute and was active on the executive board for many years. The founding of the institute as an interdisciplinary institution was a novelty for a university of applied sciences - at the time it was exotic, nowadays it's a well-established research environment at FH Aachen. In 2021, we have a total of twelve in-house institutes at the university.
